Octopus Maze

← Back to Home

Project Description

A new modern interpretation of a classic maze game. In this version, you can ingest pills but also spit them out. Break walls and freeze the monsters. Find your way to the red room where the little children are trapped: save them by guiding them out of the maze! I'm very proud of the sounds effects I have found, that gives a dark atmosphere to the game. The end game jingle was instead AI generated by ElevenLabs.

Initial Prompt

I lost my initial prompt, but I started by building a large maze and the main character going through it.

Project Development Snapshots

Development snapshot 1 for Octopus Maze

This colors gave me a headache. I though that is was ok to use colors that looks like vomit, as the player is ingesting and spitting out the pills. But it just looks ugly.

Development snapshot 2 for Octopus Maze

This is when I decided to change the objective of the game, from gathering all the pills, to saving the kids from the maze. A this point the gameplay is ok, but needs more challenging and strategic planning.

Development snapshot 3 for Octopus Maze

This is the colors patters I randomly Googled and decided to use. They didn't work perfectly.

Development snapshot 4 for Octopus Maze

According to the LLM I hit a common problem with 2D maze games... the player gets stuck when moving towards an edge of a wall. I was impressed by the solution, probably a common way to solve this problem, by sliding the player along the opposite axis. Never stop learning!

Lessons Learned

  • What worked: The smooth game play. I also loved the colorful Octopus, they all looked great on the first try.
  • What needed help: This was a long iterative development.
